Introducing The Bread & Butter Project

AUSTRALIA’S FIRST SOCIAL ENTERPRISE BAKERY

The Bread & Butter Project commenced in 2013, after renowned Sydney chef and baker Paul Allam and his wife Jessica Grynberg, co-founders of the famed Bourke Street Bakery, visited a group of refugee women at an orphanage on the Thai-Burmese border. Paul and Jessica taught the women how to bake bread, helping to establish a social business that supports the women and the orphanage to this day, and in the process provided inspiration for The Bread & Butter Project.

On returning home, Paul shared his vision with his partner at Bourke Street Bakery, David McGuinness and they generously gifted what could have been a valuable wholesale business opportunity for them, plus their delicious recipes and many thousands of hours of support, to create a thriving social enterprise that helps refugees and people seeking asylum in Australia.

Their vision helped establish a wholesale bakery in Sydney where 100% of the profits are invested into training and employment opportunities for refugees and asylum seekers, boosting their prospects of successful resettlement, employment and a strong sense of belonging.

The program has the capacity to train and graduate up to 30 new bakers each year and, since launch, has graduated 45 professional artisan bakers into employment in Australia's hospitality industry. Trainees have come from a range of countries, including Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Sierra Leone, Pakistan, Myanmar, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Fiji.
